FARM DAUGHTER TOUR – SCHAU DER BESTEN 2015

Anna Barnett - Thursday 19th March 2015

Team MGN were recently on tour in Germany as part of the Schau de Besten, we took the chance to see interesting daughter groups during visits to Masterrind member farms in the working area of Lower Saxony.

MONREAL

This outstanding Man-O-Man son gives the impression to be following his maternal line; transmitting great longevity traits to his daughters. Monreal really seems to a popular bull across Germany, having seen six daughters of Monreal on three different farms in the North West region. A classic example of one of the breeders visited is a 350-cow operation, with a herd average of 10,500 L, had over 16 Monreal daughters currently milking. The producer pointed out that all of them are still in the herd and they are very easy to handle.

Monreal Udder

Monreal Udder

They show a very good daughter fertility, no problems while milking in the parlor and none of them have ever had mastitis. Having viewed a selection of the Monreal daughters in this herd, it was clear that Monreal is stamping his daughters well. They were a little taller than average but were well balanced throughout and correct over the rump. Monreal daughters show excellent improvement in udder traits. All of the progeny had great udder texture with ideal teat placement and welded-on udders, showing further improvement to come with each lactation. This particular breeder complimented the bull for his daughters’ improvement over their dam’s and will be continuing to use him through the herd. Most breeders were calving Monreal daughters between 22-24 months of age, taking great advantage of their early maturity and growth rates. Monreal would be well suited for Goldwyn bloodlines where you can take advantage of the power and strength he transmits.

MANOUK is an up and coming Man-O-Man son showing plenty of potential to breed some outstanding daughters from his genomic predictions. Manouk udderWith his first daughters now calving in, there is no doubt that Manouk is certainly one to be watching this April proof run! The group viewed four of his daughters on two average sized herds which were cubicle housed. His daughters were extremely uniform, average in size, demonstrating plenty of width and strength throughout despite averaging over 32 L, in early first lactation. All of them stood squarely and tracked like trains making him a suitable bull for both housed and grazing systems. They were all clean boned through the leg and had an ideal set. From below, their udders were square and wide, with clean attachments. Breeders looking to create manageable, trouble-free cows should be using this bull!

FRANKLYN

Franklyn is an early Freddie son who has a striking genomic proof, specialising in health and production traits. The first daughter we saw was held on a 120 cow farm with a robotic system. She was average in size, stood squarely and had a hard top-line, carrying plenty of strength. She also tracked well when viewed from behind. Underneath she showed great udder promise and looked to be a solid, hardy cow in the making!

The second daughter was very similar, although from on a larger farm consisting of over 320 head in production. She was also a strong-set heifer, tidy underneath and looked very similar to Franklyn’s predicted proof. The breeder also had nine other daughters sired by Franklyn and was pleased with the results. Franklyn is suitable for breeders looking to add durability and health traits to their herd
